The Port Fairy Football Netball Club has completed

02 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
The Port Fairy Football Netball Club has completed its senior football coaching appointments for the 2012 season.

Tommy Taylor has been reappointed coach of the club's reserves team, while senior player Josh Rendell has taken on the role of under 18s coach.

He replaces Paul Butters, who has taken on the senior coaching job at East Warrnambool.

The appointments of Taylor and Rendell complete the senior coaching team, which is headed by former AFL player Bernie Harris the club's senior non-playing coach.

His assistant coaches for the year will be brothers Michael and Nick Sheehan.

The Seagulls have been back on the training track for two weeks since the Christmas break and will train on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights.

Nick Sheehan said the aim of the training program was to keep enthusiasm high.

"Having myself, Mick and Bernie working together, it means we can get a bit of variety into our training," he said.

"This time of year it can be tough training on the hot nights. But we are using the beach a lot, with most training nights starting with a run along the beach.

"Another thing we are doing is a mini triathlon. So things like that work in really well mixed with improving our skills by using the footys as well."

Sheehan said the coaching staff was pleased with the number of young players taking part in pre-season training, and that the talented group would play a big part in the 2012 season.

He said the club was also excited about the high number of potential recruits, with up to a dozen new players expected to join the Seagulls in the coming weeks.

In more good news, the Gardens Oval has been chosen to host a TAC Cup game between the Geelong Falcons and North Ballarat Rebels on Easter Saturday, April 7.

The game is expected to draw a big crowd, with both teams fielding talented youngsters from the south-west and Port Fairy consistently recording high tourist numbers during the Easter long weekend.

The Hampden league begins its home and away season on April 14 when Port Fairy travels to Koroit to take on the Saints in round one.
