When young Kirkstall boxer Corey Dwyer and Killarney's Joe Dwyer stepped into the ring last Saturday, they knew plenty about each other.
The pair contested the first bout at the Great South West Boxing Exhibition in Koroit which was organised by Koroit boxer Lyndon Edney.
The two young boxers share not only the last names but also a friendship that covers most of their lives.
"We might be related way, way back somewhere but our dad's are both good mates and we have grown up spending a lot of time together" Corey said.
"We have done nippers and surf together and boxing is something we are now having a bit of a go at."
The bout between the two saw 17 year old Corey with a one year age advantage over Joe but with Joe having a longer reach and the surprise element of being left handed.
The pair fought over three two minute rounds with Corey declared the inner on points in what was a close tussle.
"Having the crowd there you do go a bit harder and there is more pressure on" Corey said.
"We both got a few punches in but there were no real big ones thrown, we were just trying to work on opening each other up and looking for a break to attack.
"Even though we are mates we are pretty competitive so it was good fun."
